All systems have a LIfe Cycle that embrace the key processes and
activities given in the IEEE/JTC1 SC7 standards for this area. Each
problem has a specific "business case" related to the particular system.
Depending upon the problem, the organization and use of the principles
will lead to the selection of a LCM. Becuase of the continuing evolution
of the conceptual framework in healthcare, RP is a natural model for
system initiation and evolution and was intrinsic in Octo Barnett's
original effort in creating and using the M Language. The beginning of the
DHCP effort in 1977 by Ted ONeill began the conscious sytematic use of
these idea within the VA; They became an integral part of the MUG/MTA
dialog up through the last MTA meeting in 1999. In addition to the
consideration of these concepts by the MDC, the VistA and M Communiites
need more active, open forums where these ideas are actively part of the
Community discussion. There may be other LCMs more applicable to certain
problem areas or user communities and the reasons for this should be
widely known within the Community. The technology is robust but we the
users need to visibly be aware of the ways to best manage it and help in
its evolution.

BTW, I'm intrigued that ASTM E-1340 incorporates a life cycle model.
Can you elaborate a bit on this? What is the rationale here? Why is the
life cycle model within scope for the standard? (I'm not saying it
shouldn't be.)

Thats one Life Cycle Model useful for certain problems. Another which
is
much more prevalent in the M Community is Rapid Prototyping which
almost
originated with the language; an updated ASTM E-1340, just completed,
describes this LCM. Its best recommended practices related to M will
be
one task for the MDC but should be complex or burdensome.
