I use the Adobe product which appears as a printer.  I have heard that the
CutePDF Writer has been highly recommended.  I found it at:
http://www.cutepdf.com/Products/CutePDF/writer.asp.

I'm in a Windows environment, but I am still not following you.  In my
control panel->printers printers folder, there are only my regular
printers defined.  I don't see any PDF writer.  Perhaps that is the
way your software is setup, but it's not universal?
