As some of you may know, I've been exploring a few virtual machine architectures that might be useful in implementing MUMPS on Windows, OS X and other platforms. To me, it only makes sense to license a virtual machine under LGPL (or possibly a BSD style license). But this approach also raises the interesting possibility of using the VM as the basis of a standalone system. That could be problematic, though, because if a GPL licensed MUMPS is used as the basis of the implementation, then it cannot be incorporated in any other product without it, too, being licensed under GPL. That could seriously diminish the desirability of using the product from a vendor's point of view. That may seem farfetched, but it doesn't seem that unreasonable to me that standalone devices might want to incorporate parts of VistA.
