Granted that having a patient ID that will be unique throughout all time and space is not an insignificant problem. However, what I'm trying to deal with here is a much smaller subset of that universal domain. That is, a small office with a practice management system already assigns patient IDs that are unique within their particular instance of the system. Ideally, they could just store that ID away in some available field of the Vista patient record when adding it (via import of a CSV-file generated by the practice management system) and use that as a unique identifier when synching patient data from the practice management system to Vista.
