JBoss is open source, too. I don't know whether it is needed or not, but kind of suspect it is. It's all a bit confusing, and I don't know if anyone's actually tried to assemble the pieces for an open source solution. The basic difference between JBoss and Spring is that JBoss uses EJB and Spring uses ordinary beans.
