I wouldn't be quite that pessimistic. Older practice management systems,
many still in use (my office for example), still use character based
interfaces. Windows keyboard shortcuts are still faster than point,
click, point, click, point, click.

Ever the pessimist, my concern is that a mouse activated character
based interface isn't likely to play well. People want real GUIs with
windows and quality graphics, not just the ability to use a mouse. Yes,
I know it's a psychological thing, and we can protest that such a
desire makes no sense (to us, anyway). But I'm afraid that the answer
to "See, you can use a mouse" is going to be "Good grief! Is that all
you have to offer? Surely you can do better than that!" I'm not sure I
can even tell you why, but my gut level reaction to the possibility of
using a mouse with a character based interface is not a positive one. I
don't mean to minimize the ingenuity and cleverness of such a tool. I
just have a hunch that it will backfire and increase, rather than
decrease, the degree to which people have a negative view of VistA.
