The VA has a bunch of people working with the HL7 folks so they, too, are well
aware of what is going on and influencing it. That may mean the VA will
initiate some of these projects internally, which would sure be nice!

I will give this serious consideration. My bio surveillance project
will need a repository. This organisation that employs me will want
to use a common relational database. I'll need a convincing argument
for using VistA.

btw
HL7 is defining a set of messages (v3 of course) for handling public
health reporting. IMHO these should be a data source for any kind of
public health capability VistA supports.

I have also noticed that those who are grappling with public health
project as we speak, I am thinking mostly of the LA project here, are
really looking to use HL7's CDA (Clinical Document Architecture) as
opposed ot any kind of messaging. Getting VistA to handle clinical
douments would be a very good thing.

See, there is no end of opportunity to do work for free that everyone
will appreciate!

On the EHR front, I think VistA has good potential to serve as truly
great EHR. Once again, I believe the VistA community should keep an
eye on the standard. As some of you are no doubt aware, HL7, at HHS'
request, is defining a standard for EHR.
