It would be cheaper to find a usable Android phone that you can pawn off quickly after you are done with it - plus it'll connect via micro-usb.
Some apps do cost a little bit of money and for the most part, I find more free (adware) apps on Android than I do on iOS these days. For the popular apps, you will find them on both Android and iOS platforms. And for everything else, you will also most likely find an equivalent or acceptable alternative on either platform.
