Yes it can be very confusing.
Being able to accept and display 720p content =! displaying it at a native resolution of 1280x720p
For people who primarily watch DVD vs HD, it is important that they pick a set that will either display 480p natively, or if it's a fixed pixel set or HD set that mandates upconverting all signals then it should be a set that displays 720p natively. Otherwise you loose the progressive signal.
It gets really ridiculous when DVD players are being advertised with DVI/HDMI and being able to upconvert to 720p/1080i. While a lossless digital signal from DVI/HDMI is nice, there is no benefit from upconversion unless your TV can't do as good a job. Displaying a DVD @ 1080i is DOWNCONVERTING the signal from progressive to interlaced. The newer generation of Mits and Sammy DLP's have great internal processing when displaying a 480p signal @ 720p and negate any need for a DVD deck with upconversion.
Let me say again, having two HD resolution standards was a stupid, stupid idea. Thankfully manufacturers are designing 1080p devices even though it's not a standard yet.

Yeah jsut found that out myself. Went to the Sony website, looked at the new XBR and it says "displays 1080i, 720p, etc". Actually downloaded the manual and lo and behold, the it gives the real answer.
