boot to the SATA controller and update the IDE controller drivers back to standard, may re detect and boot.
FWIW I have had good luck going PATA to SATA but not in the other direction for some weird reason ( XP ? )
Doesn't appear to be possible. I tried setting the drivers on the new clone the same as a functioning PATA machine, I tried putting a PATA drive in a SATA machine and installing the driver then using that as a basis for the reclone. Nothing worked. Only a recovery install fixes it, but that means I end up reinstalling drivers and updates again, so it's hardly worth the effort. (Once again, recovery install proves itself to be a last resort option.)
Finally I just reinstalled Windows on the PATA drive. Thanks MS.
