Are the NIC slots positioned in the same relative location on both notebooks? Are the screens the same size? It would seem to be that the NICs antenna, when used on the newer one, must somehow be less effective in reception...could be due to positioning near the housing of the notebook, or due to a different screen, notebook generated interference, etc. When you put them in the same position, did you try reorienting the newer NB so that the antenna points toward your wireless router? Of course, it could be some business going on inside the newer NB in terms of how it uses the received signal coming out of the NICs...that wouldn't be a matter of reception, but one of electronics...might have to try a NIC recommended for the newer NB. Just some thoughts...
The notebooks have the PCMCIA slots on opposite sides, and the new one is bigger (15" screen as opposed to 11".) I moved the laptops so that the NIC is in the same place and still no soap. I guess it could be interference from the laptop, but since the newer one is sitting between the older one and the router and the older one is still seeing the router, I'm not sure how I could fix it.
I'm using two brand new NICs, so while it would make sense if they didn't work with the older one, the newer one should work. Grrr.
Thanks for the suggestions though.
