If you install a new copy of XP in a folder with a different name (say "winxp"
instead of "windows") you can then copy user profiles across to the new
installation.

See:

:Subject: [H] Extracting profile from a dead Windows XP installation
     :
     :Hi guys,
     :
     :
     :long story:
     :
     :mainboard dies
     :replace mainboard with identical mainboard
:machine bluescreens during bootup in an entirely non-helpful way
:do repair installation of XP SP2; no change, still bluescreens
:put harddisk in an entirely different machine with a different
:chipset, do another repair install of windows, no change
     :
     :What. the. hell.
     :
     :Suggestions?
     :
     :
:the data on the disk is intact, but that windows install has utterly
:borked itself to FUBAR status, is there an easy/semi-easy way to
:transfer the profiles across to another install (which I've done and
     :works) on the same disk
     :
     :
:yes yes, I know, take backups...
     ::(
     :
     :help plz.
     :
     :-_-_
