The Embargo went into effect in 1962 (Kennedy) was nextrenewed by Johnson (67) and Nixon didn't make any changes. Carter increased restrictions in 1976, Reagan maintained them, Bush Sr. Renewed them; Clintonmade changes by making them less (allowing up to $1,200 US to be sent to Cuba to family members; medical supplies) and more (secondary business transactions through bank and internet functions became an offense). In 1998, a panel of 14 (8 R, 6 D) offers proposal to eliminate embargo, which was rejected.Fact is, it isn't a Right Wing craziness that keeps are methods toward Cuba,it's an electoral one. Cuban voters turn out at the highest rate of anyone in the US - almost 90%. And amongst them, the sentiment in Florida is high in opposition to Cuba. Very few people (R) or (D) feel like they have the balls to just say "yeah, we're sick of the embargo" for ramifications of losing Florida in a national election. On another note, the rest of the world is doing big business with Cuba(especially Canada), yet the American RightWing continues it's jihad againstFidel, while cozying up to China. Beyond silliness. Its hard for some to swallow that there was a time when Democrats actually
gave a shit about combating tyranny head on, be it in the form of gangs,
organized crime, or fetid dictatorships. The only presidents to instigate
military action directly at communist regimes were Democrats. Had RFK not
been assassinated, who knows if Castro's regime would have stayed up? RFK
was vehemently anti-communist - he would NEVER have opened up relations with
China unlike Nixon. Castro was a finger-click away from nuking 40 million
Americans and for many that water wont be under the bridge until Castro
sleeps with the fishes in the Bahía de Cochinos. The Cuban population in
Florida has good reason to oppose any cooperation with Castros regime.
