I recently did my first AMD setup since the K6 days. I had a third dual PIII PC that I used as a PATA storage box, and since I wanted to occasionally use it for AIW recording, and it had a problem recording audio, I decided it was time to make it more useful with a major upgrade.

I read a article in Maximum PC which called the new new Semperon 64 3400 a "hell of a deal" and I realized I could do this upgrade, of motherboard, RAM and Semperon for under 300 bucks.

The Semperon, runs very cool, and is based on the new 90 core but uses the 754 socket. A review in Extreme Tech http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1841934,00.asp showed better then Athlon 64 3400+ socket 754 performance on encoding. http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1842194,00.asp ....So I thought for my purposes it was a great bargain, and since it ran so cool, it would make a nice CPU for a future Media Center box.

Right after I installed, patched, and setup my new Semperon box, I decided to run an encoding benchmark test against my P4 media workstation, and my primary Xeon Workstation. Here are the results. I was surprised the Semperon lagged this far behind. TMPEnc is probably tweaked for Intel, and HT, probably is the big difference here.

Original File Recorded with AIW 800XT 32min 24 sec of broadcast video
Starting File Size 1.55 GB (1,674,397,696 bytes)
Finished File Size, After re-encoding 1.34 GB (1,446,721,540 bytes)

Input
Video MPEG-2, NTSC, 720X480, 61.76 MB/Minute
Audio 48,000 KHz 16 Bit, Stereo

Encoder TMPEnc 3.0 Xpress supports SMP, supports HT
encoded at Standard NTSC DVD settings to 33 percent of a DVD size.

Output
