The problem is the that confounded numbering system that AMD uses (not that Intel is that much better).
The "3400+" Sempy is only 2GHz w/256KB cache. That'll perform worse than an older Newcastle A64 3000+ (2GHz w/512KB cache). 256KB seems to be the cut-off point for A64s. Once you hit 128KB, even overclocking doesn't help as much.
