As someone with family who visits Guam yearly, I understand your thought.  Though they have campaigned repeatedly for consideration of statehood, so I’m not sure if I would say they are some terribly unhappy people ;)

Colonialism does yield quite a few problems.  Thus, the US has no colonies ;)
