Thanks Ben,
This makes much sense too! The modem reports itself as type HCF so I used the generic HCF driver from Conexant. The AC97 and HDA generic drivers are for a type HSF modem. But, I'm still testing/looking.

Yes, this modem did connect to the original "defeatured" SB sound card (CT5807). First time I've ever seen a SB card the only had LineOut for sound. Yes, there is a blue 4-pin "speaker out" connector on the inside edge for the card, but no cable or port on the Dell case! This PC must have originally come with a set of powered PC speakers (long gone by now!). Very odd sound card, but did find info on it at Creative.

This original sound card has been swapped out with another SB sound card out of some other Compaq hulk the PC owner found. The new sound card (CT5805-ess1371/1373) has no interconnect for the Conexant modem. No big loss.

This chore should wrap up today. Just have a few more apps to install and MS Ofc. Then I believe I will formally retire from all things Dell, Compaq, or HP! I'll take a WhiteBox home-built PC any day. Heck, I've got a house full of them......LOL!
Thanks again.
Best,
Duncan

The AC'97 driver is likely the one you want. All of the Conexant modems I've seen with Dell have used that driver.

HDA = High Def Audio
AC'97 = Standard sound cards

I think it's how it outputs it's whirrs and buzzes to the sound card that determine the driver.

The Dell POS machine is on the mend. Heavy sucker now!
Might still need a new psu, but that is owner's decision.
Visited the Conexant site for drivers for the old Dell (Conexant) modem.
Already have latest "Dell" driver for this pos modem...... :)
Was confused by the 3 different W2K versions:
Win2K
AC'97 (?)
hda (?)
Any help for "ac'97" and "hda" would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Duncan
