Maybe we do, but eventually has come and gone twice in
7+ years over 2 PC's due 
to the machine or HDD dying & recovery has been same
as you would do to maintain 
redundancy, restoring the last backup or swapping the
drive into another system. 
So time wise to repair I loose no more than you would.
Hell I've had more issue 
having to re-install fubared XP client machines, reset
their machine passwords, 
& rejoin than I have keeping the domain up.

Call me old fashioned, but in the Novell days a single
server for small lans w/ 
backups was all you needed. I do see the value of a
second DC and think a VM of 
2K server on linux box is a great idea that I had not
put much thought into it 
before. If I had another GX260 I'd do just that since
it would solve 2 problems 
without sucking too much juice.

Point here is for basic services, assuming monthly
image backups, a home user 
SHOULD run a domain for the benefits even single
server. They should also 
consider running a second DC IF they can afford too
but not shy away if they can't.
