Depending on the phone you can use Exchange ActiveSync, which just has
the phone poll Exchange via HTTP requests and they will get their email,
contacts, and calendar on their phone.
It's free and it works pretty well.

and see what he wants to do. Hosted makes the most sense esp. for the
limited number of people (2 to 3). I have no plans of playing like I
know exchange - in fact, I already told him I don't know it well.
