Cost of the media is a major deterrent from trying. I have a BD-RE drive (re-writable) and 2 BD-RE disks (cost 10GBP each >.< ), which I occasionally use. Write times are still quite lengthy and when you combine those write times with the cost of the media, you realise hard drives are a better choice for backups.
