I've had better luck with PATA adapters based on Silicon Image's 0680A
chipset.

I needed to re-solder a jumper block (jp1) because it was placed very high
and at a 15* angle. (A random quality control problem hopefully.)
The above has sockets that point to the side (a possible clearance problem)
and has a one year warranty.
FWIT:
The following seems to be the same chipset (see the faqs) and the sockets
point out the top. It has a 5 year warranty.
I never heard of them...
