There are some models that support both DDR2 and DDR3, but I'd never touch them. Asus likely makes a DDR2-equivalent version of the board you're looking at. Yes, the two memories are incompatible, and yes, DDR3 is pricey...and doesn't really provide much performance boost. But, we are starting to see the sunset on DDR2...Core i7 due out later this month is exclusively DDR3.
DDR2 is dirt cheap, however...you can get 8GB for less than $100 after rebates. Personally, I'm fond of Gigabyte's P45 boards. If I was buying a new board today, it'd be a UD3 model from Gigabyte.
