Greg/Rick,
LOL! Yes, I did also read up on the Core i7 needs also. Thank you for the differentiation 'tween DDR2/DDR3. I believe I will risk the more ahead. I see Crucial w/Ballistix DDR3 brand 2G(2x1GB) kits for $105.99. That looks to be ~$50/stick; which is cheaper than I paid for the last AMD/Mushkin (2x512MB DDR Dimm) order! Yes, this ram is not the bleeding edge of the bleeding edge, but for the 3 machine kits I am pricing, certainly good enough for normal duties....... Plan to try and run at 1066 or 1333 fsb.
If the Gaming machine has grumbles, I can make adjustments............... :)
ATM, I am at ~$435/per machine (w/o new video cards, of course). I plan to capture as much older PCI stuff that I still have that works. Odd, this is ~1/10 what my first PC cost me back in 1975!
(and this system still exists and runs well on an Abit IT5Hr2.0)........... :)
Best,
Duncan

There are some models that support both DDR2 and DDR3, but I'd never touch
them. Asus likely makes a DDR2-equivalent version of the board you're
looking at. Yes, the two memories are incompatible, and yes, DDR3 is
pricey...and doesn't really provide much performance boost. But, we are
starting to see the sunset on DDR2...Core i7 due out later this month is
exclusively DDR3.

DDR2 is dirt cheap, however...you can get 8GB for less than $100 after
rebates.

Personally, I'm fond of Gigabyte's P45 boards. If I was buying a new board
today, it'd be a UD3 model from Gigabyte.
