Drivers are definitely a good place to start, but if the laptop is older (since it originally had Win ME installed) there's a good chance that as someone earlier said that it's an ACPI/bios problem. ACPI code is rather notorious for being buggy, especially on older boards. Doubt it would make a difference, but if there are any BIOS updates, you could give that a shot as well.

Fairly common problem. Usually the result of a dodgy driver. If it were me, I'd look to update the video driver first. I seem to remember having
similar problems with older Dell laptops and the video driver having
something to do with it.
