j.,

Yes, am aware of Acronis. Just can not afford until next year. Besides I am hazy about how to choose "data" from "programs." Conceptually I think I know the difference, but the way these modern programs intertwine with any/all data I create, picking/choosing is tough. Besides, the old machine had 4 games in various stages of completion. I'd like to keep all this current links intact and not reload all of them from scratch. ..... if possible.

Anyway, the old plan died. I managed to pinch enough space on the c:\ drive to upgrade the system to XP SP3...... :) It most likely still needs some huge number of hotfixes..... I did use the Win Backup Program to back up the new XP c:\ drive. At least the OS will match what is already on the new PC I may restore to.

I've finished for the evening! All my "tools" CDs will not play nice with a scsi CDROM! No biggie. Once I tear this old scsi system down, I will be down to just ONE Left! But, I am now fully XP SP3.
Works for me ATM.
Happy New Year!

1. Acronis True Image or similar beats Windows Backup anyday
2. External drive best bet, DVD second
3. Backup everything
4. Always restore to an alternate path & only try to re-use data not programs!

I recently had a change to play with the built-in Backup application in W2Kpro. It did seem to work; it did create the special dot-bkf files.
They were huge!
I have a machine I would like to decommission. It has an old scsi hd system that has now run out of spare! I plan to back up all 4 partitions to my new NAS. My question involves the Restore side of the this operation. My plan is to attempt to restore the dot-bkf files back to a new replacement PC that is completing its' burn-in cycle. The old OS going out (backing up) will be W2Kpro SP4 (AMD-based). The new PC (for Restore) is XPpro SP3 (Intel-based).
Am I getting ready to create a mess????
Or, should I be selective in what I BackUp from the old primary boot hd (c:\)???
Thank you,
Duncan
