AFAIK Buffalo is defunct in the USA now due to a CSIRO case. But yes, Asus is a readily availble router that has 32MB RAM that allows you to load a MEGA image which has a lot of features.
But to be honest, a WRT54GL is more than enough for most users. In fact most WISP's use the WRT54GL.
