When you install the OS "fresh", depending on the SP revision in/on the install
media
and how you manually updated it (IF any -- slipstreamed, Admin sized SPs, etc.)
before connecting to the Internet, you might literally get offered hundreds of
updates
or patches at the update site, AND if you refuse (for good reasons) a SP and
get
the *other stuff* available instead (in its place) the numbers are naturally
even higher.
PLUS you need to go through that several times because the patches beget more
patches
to build on the patches just added in the last session.
(I know I'm preaching to the Choir, as we have all seen this.)

As long as I see some remote connection with what is on the machine, AND MS
recommends them at Windows Update or the newer Microsoft Update site, I
generally
let them install *almost*anything they want.
Critical ones only. Been burned a few times letting MS install what they think
are
wonderful new drivers or hardware related stuff.

One thing I've noticed, same as you might be saying, they seem to error on the
side
of caution and add in some Office stuff, even if Office seems like it is not
installed at all...
(Seen that more than once...)

I assume that when I load a fresh XPpro OS, I do get a plethora of "hooks" for features and add-ons that I may never ever use. Correct?

Could this be why tonight I received critical updates for:
Access Snapshot Viewer
Outlook
MS Suite 2005

Outlook remains troublesome; I do not use it actively. Suppose I am happy to see MS finally fixing OL after the past 10 years of comments here in the Collective........ :)

The other 2 I have no idea about at all. Are these connected to PowerPoint?

I do know how to "hide" stuff, but I do wonder what future trouble I might buy without these "critical" updates. Opinions are most welcome................
