XP should have picked it up with a reboot. However, don't make a common virtualization mistake and instantly assume that adding a vCPU will make it faster. Scheduling for multiple vCPUs adds a LOT of overhead to the virtualization layer, and will result in slower performance overall, unless your specific application(s) in the VM make extensive use of multithreading...
