Problem starts with proper (read good, not plastic crap like WD & Seagate sell) external bay wise it's > $100 a USB 4-bay case never mind RAID or NAS functionality.

There are various routers & "droboshare" like devices that have USB for mass
storage.

Drobo & a USB enabled router would eliminate the need for Droboshare add on. Yet fact is Drobo's biggest caveat is PRICE despite great proprietary RAID like features. Not being OSS driven is also a reason I'd avoid multi-hundred $$$ Drobo, HP or any other close-source/windows based devices.

Drobo's aren't that good. I had one and returned it. First off they
are not NAS'es because there is no network port. For that you have to
get another attachment.

I still think that getting a HP Mediasmart Server for his needs would be
fantastic!

They are running cheap these days, around 400 bucks or so. And run
Windows Home Server. I've had one and couldn't be happier.

It's not a RAID box per se, but it does data duplication very nicely.
Right now I have 4 1.5TB Seagates in there and only have 1 TB free.

Plenty of pr0n! :P
