Agreed -- If plain cat5, could be the problem. When I installed some gigabit switches at work (original CAT5 cable runs were done in early 90s) some computers / ports went to full gigabit speeds, some stayed at 100. Had to rerun some cables.

My understanding is that auto-negotiation for port speeds is fairly reliable now... but you could always try forcing the computers to gigabit if the cables should be good.
