I'd argue ati is better off now then it would have been, and the 780g has been one of the most reliable htpc platforms. And the 4890 is a better bang then anything nvidias got atm.
But 5 years ago? Please. When amd had the x2, intel had pentium-ht and then pentiumd. And the x2 DESTROYS both of those. Until core2, 2 years ago, amd -owned- intel in performance. But amd didn't make as much money as they should have because intel basicaly paid off manufacturers not to use them. That's not bull, intel was busy trying to negotiate settlements in different places until the eu hammered them. One piece of evidence was incredible - intel checks in the hands of retail stores in Dresden, the home of amd fabs. Store owners said they received the checks as long as they didn't market amd pcs. But let's recaps: the last 2 years, since 07, core2 has been the proc to have. But amd isn't terrible - the phenom2 is a good performer and the 780g is awesome for htpc. But intel did juice the marketplace to the detriment of amd.
