Steve,
Thank you for the reply. Yes, I am just getting use to all the "ATT" smoke now blowing my way. I will adjust as req'd........ :) Odd also, since 2 hours ago ATT and I declared my dsl modem dead! Yet, it still seems to talk well (as long as there is NO RAIN!). IT is often really tough dealing with the 1-level script-readers. ATM, I am getting a "NEW" modem. $40 to me. Really sux, but I will play THEIR game all the way to get the WIRES between me and the CO fixed on their nickel! YES, while good-ole'-jmaccraw can be crusty, I still follow his advice. Well, when I understand it...............:) He does his stuff his way; I do my stuff my way. I spend time trying to figure out the differences....... :)
Best,
Duncan

Duncan,

maccrawj is correct. When I was with AT&T and using TB, they required SSL but not secure authentication. It took me a while to realize that they are two different things.

Could be with it disabled they are allowing non-SSL despite claiming you must use it. In other words the checkbox is likely correct, unchecking it is disabling SSL. SSL is where you want to be and you may find the non-SSL ceases to work down the road given that are telling customers they must use SSL. Current version TB is 2.0.0.21 but a quick search did not net me any conclusive info concerning SSL bugs.

Right now I am using SSL for pop3.gmail.com, but not using Secure Authentication. Looks like gmail doesn't support SA despite doing SSL.

The reason your mail is under docs & settings for your user is that TB automatically creates the profile the way, as do most windows programs. You can use the -profilemanager switch when launching TB to get it to bring up the profile manager where you can manually choose where to create a profile's data folder. With that created you can either import again or you may be able to just copy over the data from the other TB profile.

Personally I have my TB installed on drive D:'s program files tree and the profile under a data folder on drive P:. When I backup, I simply shutdown TB, Zip up the profile tree & archive that.

Backup wise all the email currently is in:

 > Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\yy98ry8o.default\Mail

OK. I still seem to have connectivity issues w/BellSouth/ATT testing/working..... :(

Was able to install TB on this machine and send/rcv email. I am still digging/tweaking all TB settings. It seems that the ISP and Mozilla/Eudora have vastly different opinions of the "Require secure authentication" checkbox.(!) If I uncheck this box in TB, email flows as expected. If I tick this box in TB (as my ISP says I MUST!), TB errors immediately on "Check Mail." I am still trying to get my head around this........ :)

But, ATM, I am seeking insight into the basic install of TB. I was able to get TB to install (most) of its' stuff on my d: partition. However, somewhere else in the install script I missed a subtle ask about "where" I want TB to "put" all the data (email). ATM, and after I let TB scan/copy the current Eudora, I seem to have all the TB data living at:

C:\Documents and Settings\UID\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\yy98ry8o.default\Mail

>>C:\Documents and Settings\UID\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\yy98ry8o.default\Mail\Local Folders

>>C:\Documents and Settings\UID\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\yy98ry8o.default\Mail\pop.att.yahoo.com

Can I coerce TB to put this "email data" back on d:\ with the rest of the proggy (like Eudora)?

If not, I will get use to it I suppose....... :)

But, this now makes my normal use of SyncToy 2.0 a problem. I just do not know who/what I tell SC20 to copy/echo from TB to my NAS for daily/weekly backup...??? Much less whether to even use SC20 to copy/echo the TB program files on the d:\ partition............ :(

Sorry if this question seems weird. Since this recent ISP kurfuffle, most things normal have become a challenge.
Best,
Duncan
