If I'm reading this right, what they are talking about is signal strength. There is a hand-shaking between the box out on the street and your modem on signal strength. It needs to get a certain level for performance without dropouts. With the new docsis, the maximum signal strength available is less (no, I don't understand it either), so they must mean that for some reason (bad cables, lots of splitters), the modem is putting out max or close to max signal, so they have to do something.

I don't know what your internal wiring looks like, but you should probably have a few splitters as possible between the incoming line and your modem. In theory, the cable company allows for one split (-3.5 db) down and then your modem is supposed to be in the center of the range. I split the modem off one two port and run the other side to everything else in the house.

I got a message from COX today saying that they were performing upgrades on the lines in my area next week, and they noticed that my modem = Surfboard 2 was out of range. The upgrades may adversely effect my connection, and they want to send a tech out to adjust the lines so my modem is in range, and I don't experience any outages during the upgrades.

Does this make any sense to anybody? And if they want to adjust my lines why do they need to make an appointment?
