Poorly crimped, loose fitting, & overloaded drive molex connectors are
common, yet I've yet to see that from the motherboard power connector
which seems to be a much better designed & made connector. The modular
jacks/plugs are closer to mobo than drive connectors design wise.
Soldered vs. plug, solder is going to win every time assuming the
soldering is done well so I'm not saying modular is better but I do
think it's just as good if properly made. Sticking to the better quality
vendors should ensure that. One could argue modular is more durable
since the solder points are not under strain of a cable bundle, and that
cable bundles passing through psu case openings are more likely to break
than modular solutions.
Lastly to each his own, you have to live with your choices so I
understand caution.

LOL! The connectors used in modular are not going to cause resistance
problems, keeping track of the cables might be an issue for some. Not
enough of a reason to not use modular IMHO, the only reason I can see is
if
price is higher for same PSU to be modular. If the connectors are standard
enough, then it would not be an issue of tracking cables "specific to one
PSU".
