used diskpart in w7 but did not do a ntfs format. FWIW I was able to see the drives but was not in XP for some reason. Possibly did not dig far enough. In w7 got the can not write error on the one side that is protected. May try this but this thing has two separate drives in it, not two partitions as I originally assumed :'(
