I didn't realize it was just sequential but it seems that ATTO is the one that everybody praises for testing hardrives. From what I've read, random reads and writes are more "real world" and will take your advise using CrystalDiskMark and the 4k random. Unfortunately, I just added the 3rd drive because it was delivered less than an hour ago so I can't compare the new 3 drive setup to the just replaced 2 drive setup. I've re-installed Win7 Pro and run ATTO again. 4k read/write are 97 MB's and 87 MB's which is ok but the range between 16k and 8,192k is dramatically better all the way up to 378 MB's read speed for 8,192k. I could tell it was faster when it re-installed Windows and the Catalyst 10.10 install was fun watching the green progress bar fly from left to right. No wonder people are so stoked about SSD's and I can't wait until my 4th drive gets here to compare it then

For the second time I had problems with my SATA DVD burner not showing up in Windows so I just pulled it and put the old IDE drive back. You'd think they would have problems like that ironed out by now. Thanks Greg!

Keep in mind those are still sequential speeds. STR isn't irrelevant--higher STR can improve things like large file copies, game level loads, etc--but it has little impact on the "wow" factor. It turns out that the best indicator for that is 4k random. I'd suggest running a CrystalDiskMark 4k random test as well, and use a data size of at least 1GB. Expect horrible results on a
magnetic drive--under a few MB/s is common.

Subject: [H] ATTO Benches with current setup before additional drives
arrive..

Just some ATTO 2.46v numbers I recorded in anticipation of the 3rd Seagate drive due today and the 4th I just bought on eBay (0.5k to 8,192k range).
My game box currently has a WD Caviar Black 640 gig drive for Steamapps
folder backup and downloads I use (CPUz, GPUz, drivers etc.) and a Seagate
series 7200.12 500 gig 2 drive RAID 0 array.

WD Caviar Black basically stays between 100 and 110 MB's per second read
and write speeds from 16k through 8,192k with the all important 4k speed
(approximate Windows boot file size) being 54 MB's read and 66 MB's write
(strange..).

Seagate 7200.12 2 drive RAID 0 array is basically twice as fast from 16k
through 8,192k and the 4k speeds being 97 MB's read and 86 MB's write
(makes sense..).

I'll update as soon as I add my other two drives unless I decide to get
ambitious and test a 3 drive array. :>)
