All my cables are Cat5 and admittedly no longer than 6' long but work just fine for gigabit speeds (wish it really was gigabit speed).

What the others have said.

Our office was originally wired with CAT5 (not CAT5e) and *most* of the runs of cable work for gigabit. Some of the ones that didn't sync up at 1gb worked after I recrimped the cables, some I had to replace.

If I update my router and my switch to GB do I need to change the wire from 5 to 6?

Thanks
