Technically GigE requires Cat5E and not just plain Cat5.
Of course the only changes between Cat5 and Cat5E are some additional
tests, mostly on near end cross talk.
If you did a good job on putting the jacks on the cables, then you are
most likely fine with GigE on cat5
If you did an OK job on putting the jacks on the cables, and they are
shorter (200 feet or less), you are also most likely fine.
I have seen many Cat5 installations that all we did was take a true
Cat5E scanner (Fluke 4000 at the time IIRC), and re-verified the cable
plant, and 98% of the runs passed as Cat5E.
Re-did the jacks on the few that did not, and then they passed as well.
Cat6 is NOT a requirement for Gigabit ethernet.
