Steam is a service for buying and installing games digitally. It also has a lot of community features and online play, similar to Battle.net and other services, but there are Steam games which are single player, multiplayer, and co-op.
Not only does it mean you can buy and install game without having to go to a store, it also keeps track of all the games you've bought so you can download and re-install at any time. And for many games it also backups your saved games and settings to the Steam service. You can also download and install Steam games on multiple computers at the same time, you can just only be logged in to one computer at a time.
