As long as he still has his Steam account, his purchases will be valid. He should backup his settings and savegames, especially for any games that don't support the Steam vault, but doesn't need to backup the game files themselves. He can just re-download them later.
Sorry to hear he's having problems - I've been using it for years now and find it much more stable than non-Steam versions of games.
