wow...$30-40 for the original disc? I wonder if I can make him an install disc from my laptop (it is identical to his). Or, he can buy a university copy for less than $20, but will have to get all the drivers from sony.

I've never seen the installed key the same as the sticker key FWIW. And I have checked a lot of installs.

He may need to buy a disk from the manufacturer, they usually sell restore disks a lot cheaper then anything he can buy. I've seen $30-$40 in the past. Not sure about Sony. I doubt the blue sticker key would work with a borrowed disk. OEM SW is fingerprinted to the HW.

YMMV

I guy a know has a Sony laptop. It came with Windows 7 Home, 64bit. The HD died and he didn't make any recovery discs.

He's willing to buy a new HD, but what about Windows? Isn't he entilted to a Windows 7 Home 64bit license? I believe there is a blue sticker on the bottom of the laptop with the number to activate windows. So, if he can somehow get a copy of Windows and install it, can he be legal? Or should he contact Sony?
