Thane,
Take a serious scan at the 'clip.' Perhaps this clip has been
mis-formed, or, it is just worn out. Then, there may be some 'blivet' or
relief in the printer that is responsible for the release of this clip.
Yes, can be crazy making!
I never got into these PC-related printers. Way too small.

I've got an HP 2430dtn in that won't feed paper from tray 2 (the first
paper tray - tray 1 is the manual feed tray on these printers.) The
problem appears to be the metal piece that supports the paper and
lifts it up against the pickup rollers. When you put the paper in the
tray, there is a clip on the bottom that holds the spring loaded metal
sheet down. When you put it in the printer, I would assume this clip
should release and allow the metal sheet to lift the paper up, but the
clip doesn't release. I can reach under the printer and release the
clip and it works fine, but of course, the next time I take the tray
out and reload it, clip re-engages. I've looked through the service
manual, but the tray is considered a FRU, so there aren't any part
breakdowns for it. Anyone have any ideas?
