On the garmin units, you call tell if lifetime map upgrades are included simply 
by paying. Attention to the letters that follow the model number. Like 1450 LTM 
would mean lifetime traffic and maps.

Btw, the iPad makes for a fantastic gps solution. Beats my phone and garmin 
nuvi 765t. You do have to buy a nav app with stored maps, unless you want to 
rely on 3d maps,( which I hate). Oh, you can buy lifetime map upgrades for 
garmin devices after the fact too, so if you have a unit that doesn't have 
lifetime maps, you can still get them.
