Oh..and the mount doesn't shake (the arm is really stiff) and holds the
iPad very securely...plus you can use it with other tablets. And, you
can remove the holder (not the arm) and replace it with one of their
phone holders (I have an Arkon holder/arm for my Droid Incredible, but I
got that before I moved to the iPad for GPS). The arm for the tablet is
a lot stiff than the one for the phone.

Bro,
This mount rocks my world (mainly because of the price):

Also, I use Navigon. I have it both for android (for my phone) and on
the iPad (yes, I paid for it twice). I have the USA version (includes
canada & territories, iirc). There may be others with stored maps,
but I settled on this one. BTW, Garmin recently bought Navigon, so I'm
not sure how that will affect the future of updates. They just
released a new version.
I have good luck with Nav, personally. I don't have to fight with the
software. Also, I have the Wifi version of the iPad, so I have this

for my gps signal. Links to the iPad over BT. Obviously, when I
bought the iPad I didn't intend to use it for GPS...but frankly, I
think having the gps receiver separate means you get better signal
reception than if it is in the iPad. Also, you can use the receiver
with other stuff or even loan it to another person. Options.

Anthony, found a suitable mount for the iPad to use it as a GPS?
I've got a separate GPS b/c I can take it with me when I travel (as
opposed to the one in the car)-you'd be surprised how often people
always ask me why I have 2, and I tell them the reason and they're
like "Ohhhh, ok-that makes sense!"
Anyway, I used an iPad once when I was traveling with Google Maps and
it worked great except for the one time it fell over b/c well, I
didn't have a mount for it! :P
So if you've got a rec on a good solution...though it might be worth
my time to get one custom-made once I get the new car lol...
Ohh, and which Nav software do you recommend? Like I said, I just
used Google Maps to see where I was going (I found the destination
and just navigated towards it) as I almost never trust the GPS
directions and make my own way there as I find it's usually more
efficient (at least if I know the area which I usually do)...

On the garmin units, you call tell if lifetime map upgrades are
included simply by paying. Attention to the letters that follow the
model number. Like 1450 LTM would mean lifetime traffic and maps.
Btw, the iPad makes for a fantastic gps solution. Beats my phone and
garmin nuvi 765t. You do have to buy a nav app with stored maps,
unless you want to rely on 3d maps,( which I hate). Oh, you can buy
lifetime map upgrades for garmin devices after the fact too, so if
you have a unit that doesn't have lifetime maps, you can still get
them.

yes both Tom Tom and Garvin offer this on some units. I have a
couple years old Tom Tom and it is probably cheaper for me to buy a
new one then update!
