Wow...I'm using the 3700v1 (I think it is v1 but there is no v1 after
the 3700), so your results are particularly meaningful to me. However,
I think I want to wait until I get a router with usb 3 rather than 2. I
tried at first to use the 3700 as a nas, but I gave up since it was too
slow. Easier just to use file sharing over either the powerline network
(which I turned off right now) or the gigabit network.

Like Z I can attest to that! Especially because my previous router was the
Netgear wndr3700v1, I loved that router because I was also using it as a
NAS, I had a 2TB drive plugged into it and it was running really well until
the drive began to fill up I still had 500gb left but for some reason the
drive would no longer list my file contents and
would repeatedly disconnect. like you I also stream a lot of files on my
network and the key thing that I noticed after the latest firmware update
which did fix my usb drive disconnecting, suddenly killed DLNA. :(, I
restored to the previous firmware and then it was a toss up if I would just
point my videos off a computer or off the router. While I had been happy
with my netgear, I had not had anything else to compare it to since it was
better than my previous trendnet and that was better than my previous
router as well. The thing was that if I was streaming I normally didn't
also transfer files, but we had gotten so used to using our iPads and
AppleTV for streaming that they were starting to be in use most of the time
and if I even started to transfer a file over 1gb, then videos would begin
to drop frames.
I switched to the Asus in the last router thread we had here. (about the
end of december) I have been more than pleased with this router. It
allows me to stream, not one, but multiple streams at once (2x iPads and a
straight DLNA stream) of hd video, I am still able to push large
files across the network while streaming. I am very happy with the current
results.
My biggest problem was that I needed to re-format my external hdd so that
the Asus router could still get read-write access to my files. needless to
say, there were many TB of data being shuffled around...

Duncan,
I think that is total throughtput that router can handle (A gigabit router
should mean 1000Mbps, definitely not possible over wirelss). I found this:
Throughput
Throughput is a measure of how fast data flows through the router. The
test sends data from computer to computer, measures how much time it takes,
and calculates the result in Mbps (Megabits per second).
So based on the numbers I seriously doubt it is wifi operation. I'm
streaming blu-ray in here and I want all I can get all the time through my
router. I frequently move big files over my network.

Anthony,
Can I suppose that this 'total throughput' value is stilted toward WIFI
operation?
Like you, I sort of got disappointed when I see the current ASUS rated
1268.6 and
my own DLink rated 255.8.
But then, I only do wired network ops. And, my router's rated value is
still 5x faster/greater
than the 50Mbps speed for my FIOS connection. So, I guess my router is
mostly loafing along
ATM. Somehow I think I am missing something..... :)

Is there any word on when the new Asus will street? I'm going to wait
for a review and user feedback before I buy.
I did hear that Netgear has some good networking stuff streeting too.

Yes, the 56U is too good to be true. Amazing how Asus, a relatively
unknown networking company, has put out one of the best routers of 2011.
They look to repeat this in 2012 also!!
Amazing!! Stinksys has really gone down the drain. My friend bought
their
latest and greatest and it really blows donkey nards!!

Pretty compelling...I didn't realize my Netgear 3700 was sucking so
much
hind tit! It's been rock stable over the past year even though the usb
sharing is too slow to use.
