LCD has nothing to do with LED. A better way to look at it is LED better than CCFL since the light source is what you describe.
There are various back light schemes. My advice is avoid any edge lit. Refresh is a marketing game that has more to do with FPS and avoiding tweening much the same way oversampling helps digital audio.
