Josh,
On this one; all I can say is a big, "DITTO."
Somehow I always got your position; even when
cryptically presented. No harm, no foul.
Yes, I am a PC-guy. I built all of my toys, or bought
a chassis built by someone else. I own two of these
still. Both remain a challenge........... :)
When I am forced to buy a designed, pre-fabricated
device that I can no longer 'personalize,' then this
hobby is over for me.

Okay, I'm not sure what email your reading but you're really going off the
deep end here.

First and foremost I am a consumer and most of my arguments are from that
point of view.

At the time compaq did this because it would help them get market share,
it's ultimately also helped pc users. I pointed it out to give you some
point of reference as to why PC users are a little more picky about letting
things get closed up again versus say a mac user or some game console user.

Again I say a reasonable, logical person would of caught on in the previous
posts. Stop being so reactionary read and process what I'm saying before
you go putting words in my mouth.

so you should run your business in a manner to help your consumers, but
kill your business?

if that is the case are you referring your customers to a lower cost
competitor of yours, who provides support 24/7 on their pc's?

Compaq? Who cares what became of compaq! I was referring to how much
better
off consumers were because what compaq did to open the market up& give
us
more choices.

Funny, a half way logical reasonable person would've gotten that point.

and look how well that worked out for Compaq. it's effectively gone,

nobody is forcing you to buy apple, and osx. While there are

understand
why
it's bad that Apple controls their hardware and software. Nobody
complains
that you can't run a nintendo os on a sony psp hardware, or vice

  If
I buy a Dell I know I am buying into windows. at least it's not a
straight

while
I
"CAN" go out of my way to download ubuntu, and install. I can't
just
receive my shiny new laptop open it up and login, and proceed to

my

:-/
thats not tough, but I have to wait I want to use my new shiny

now... :)

I've enjoyed the back and forth in this thread, mostly because I
was
all
anti-Apple a few years ago.

for the arguments that Apple is a bully and that they don't play
fair
with
their licensing, well... is it a requirement that all companies
license
their patents to anyone? I do agree that competition is a healthy
way
to
get newer better results for the end user. But does that mean
that
you
have to license off your advantage? You can hate apple or samsung
all
you
want for playing the patent game, but the real issue is the uspto,
unless
we keep writing to our representatives to get this fixed asap!
nothing
will
ever change.

the uspto is what fosters this idea that i can patent a door and
from
now
on anyone who has a door on their home or place of business must
pay
damages because they didn't license the door from me, with
ignorance
to
previous art.

also I'm glad that the amazon kindle fire argument was brought up,
and
it
does help support the walled garden mentality. People are buying
more
kindle fires with the easy access to the amazon store than any
other
android tablet because it fosters this mentality of safe
purchasing
within
the walled garden. make of it as you will...
