OK, I need a current run down of some network confusion!
I run a home LAN (wired).
I use the 10.x.x.x series.
Yes, I know this is called "Class-A private."
I read that I am supposed to use a Sub-Net mask of 255.0.0.0.
OK..............???
But,
I use a Sub-Net mask of 255.255.255.0.
I can defend this choice.......(personally)......... :) even though
YOU may
have differing opinions.
Should I upgrade 6 clients to Class-A 'specs?'. Wondering?
Can do. What's another 2 days....of retirement........... :)
Please share!!!!!
Thanks,

We're all classless now. The days of "Class A|B|C" networks are long
over - use whatever network mask makes sense for your situation. Class
A|B|C is older terminology - routers now are classless (as small as a
/30 for internal private networks) - see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_address#IPv4_subnetting for more
details. Classful design was replaced in 1993 with CIDR, where you can
use any length of subnet you need to, the classes are used now as
shorthand for a /8, /16 or a /24 mask.
Realistically on a home network it doesn't matter what you use as the
network mask as you won't have a lot of devices plugged into it - all
devices do need to use the same mask of course.
