[H] AV that "freezes" a virus?

I got hit with a nasty virus (on XP SP3) that did not allow me to use my 
keyboard or mouse, so I called in a guy to help.  He rebooted and popped in 
a USB stick with a software that he said "froze" the virus, allowing the use 
of the peripherals.  From there is was a simple matter to system restore and 
clean out with AV.

I didn't get to ask him the name of the software.  Anyone ever heard of this 
and what it is called?
