Well... There is GSM hacking, and there is GSM hacking. There is of course the possibility to disrupt the network, obtain free calls, read other peoples signals, ... But, there are other valid uses. Enabling SIM sharing over bluetooth, or other means - to enable easy use of two or more SIMs (not at the same time). Implementing the protocol to let (with a compliant provider) you roam to GSM-over-wifi where it is available. Adding more conditions to what wakes the main SOC.
